in love with company

Happy Valentine’s Day one and all....!

A time of love and romance but does that apply to your Career too?

Let’s be honest we all love a bit of tender loving care at any time of the year along with feeling appreciated and valued; don’t we?

Though we might experience it at home do we all get this feeling in our jobs, where, incidentally we spend over 90,000 hours before we retire?

Possibly not.

Our recent workplace reports revealed some interesting data indicating that many employees feel undervalued and unrecognised; more on that in another post.

Feeling undervalued is one reason to re-evaluate your role in an organisation and of course there are more.

At LWR we have placed in excess of 100,000 people into permanent and temp roles, which means we have a good handle on the tell-tale signs that means it’s time to move on.

We have listed the current top few here, below.

Am I am overreacting or is a pattern emerging we hear you ask?

Well, with true transparency, before you do decide to jump ship review the facts. Any company can go through a ‘rough’ patch as can any manager or leader or employee

The big question is;

Is this a one off or is it a pattern that is constantly playing out?

As human beings, we are naturally wired to fear and avoid change. However, if you notice that the company always seems to be in disarray or your manager never has a good thing to say; it's unlikely that anything is going to change soon.

The UK is in the middle of a skills shortage therefore obtaining a new role where there is a better culture fit for you is much easier than it was a few years ago, remember the job market has changed and you don’t have to stay where you are anymore.

1 - You feel undervalued

We touched on this point earlier and it’s a big reason why many people leave organisations. It’s often down to your relationship with your first-line manager or the fact that you don’t feel stretched. This can be really de-motivating, especially if your boss refuses to acknowledge and commend your achievements. It could be time to go somewhere else where your contribution is valued.

2 - Your Boss!

Your manager will undeniably impact so much of your work experience. They will help to determine what projects you work on, who you work with, how well you work and when/if you get promoted. If it looks like he or she is going to be around for the foreseeable future, it’s time to decide on whether this works for you and if you need to consider your career options.

3 - It's Not The Right Fit Anymore

Things change: bosses change, markets change, jobs change, and your life situation changes. What may have been the perfect job once for you, may not be now, and that’s okay, that happens.

If you feel your job or career isn't aligning with your hopes, dreams, goals, and objectives for your life, it's time for you to undertake a serious work-life evaluation in the knowledge that this could result in a change of role for you.

4 - Lack of Opportunity

Opportunity

Though this isn’t always the case especially with the number of Millennials in the workplace it can still happen-you might be aware of this scenario.

If you are in a ‘classic’ organisational structure where everyone is expected to stay in role for a certain length of time, your opportunities may be naturally restricted.

Just like not having the tools or resources to do your job can cause issues, so can having your growth stunted, stalled, or slowed down. If you're not challenged or given opportunities to learn and grow in your job, restricted by the 'bureaucracy' it may be time to continue your career in a  more supportive or less rigid environment that will and can support your personal and career growth.

5 - No Career or Development Culture

 Learn

On a similar theme, it's common that candidates seek us out that they are bored or unchallenged in their current role and they can’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. When we question them more, we normally find out that the organisation doesn’t have a learning culture or a career path….. time to move on!

 6 - Business isn’t Great

As has always been the case, certain business sectors will grow more than others. Consequently, opportunities for you and your career are going to be better in growing markets rather than ones that are flat or in decline. If you notice production is down or the sales team aren’t hitting target the writing might be on the wall.

Time for some due diligence and research..... ask around, jump onto Google and inform yourself first.
